LECTURE SERIES: "Saving the North Atlantic Right Whale: Ship strikes are deadly"

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

7 pm

FREE to the public, donations greatly appreciated

Lecture given by: Bruce Russell

Tales of sea monsters scuttling ships have fueled imaginations ever since intrepid mariners first set out to sea. Herman Melville wrote in his classic Moby Dick the tale of a sperm whale attacking and sinking a whaling ship; this was based on a true story. Over a century later another true story is being told, that of large boats and ships striking and killing the globally endangered Northern Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis; fewer than 400 of these large slow-moving coastal whales are estimated to survive. In the last few decades, the National Marine Fisheries Service estimated that 2-3 Right whales were being killed each year by ships, and more from entanglements in fishing gear. Many of these have been killed of the entrances to the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. Bruce Russell will present a lecture on his work as chair of the Fisheries Service’s Right Whale Ship Strike advisory committee to document the deaths and to develop a strategy to prevent ships from killing these majestic creatures. The lecture will include beautiful and gripping pictures and a telling story of how mariners, ship owners and operators, marine biologists, conservation
groups and governments came to together and developed a comprehensive strategy to slow ships down and divert ships away from right whale habitat.

Bruce Russell is a retired Coast Guard Commander, Museum Board member and Treasurer now living in Havre de Grace. He owns a small consulting and manufacturing company specializing in marine environmental protection and the commercial shipping industry. He is an avid boater, fisherman, birder and traveler, who combines his passion for the marine environment with his work and recreation.

1 pm - 2 pm

FREE to the public, donations greatly appreciated

Lecture given by: Dr. Paul Miller and Chris Barry

Chris Barry graduated from UC Berkeley in 1974 and has since been involved in design of ships and boats including offshore oil vessels, tankers, ferries, tugs, barges, passenger vessels, fishing vessels and other work craft, amphibious vehicles, and yachts.  He has worked for design firms, vessel operators, shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers in the U.S. and the U.K. and now works for the Coast Guard, mainly involved in patrol boats and other small craft.  He is a licensed professional engineer in California and Washington, and is the chair of the small craft technical and research panel of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

FREE to the public, donations greatly appreciated

Lecture given by: Frank Lopez

Have you ever seen a beautiful tree and wondered what it is, only to get too busy to look it up or not even know where to start? Then, this program is for you.  We will take this class at a nice, relaxed pace.  First, we will go over the basics of how to identify trees using a simple key. Then, off we will go for a leisurely walk outside and put our new skills to work, and as a group identify some of these stately treasures.  Along the way, we will talk about tree lore and discuss why trees are so important to water quality.  From the far reaches of the thousands of headwaters to the most productive estuary in the United States, the Chesapeake Bay, trees play an important role.  Once we return to the museum, we will wrap up. As a bonus, you get to keep your tree ID booklet.  Now, you can hone your skills in your very own back yard, or where ever you go.

Frank Lopez has been living and working as a forester in Harford County for MD DNR Forest Service for nearly 25 years.  He has aa B.S.- Forest Science degree from the Pennsylvania State University, and a Masters of Public Administration- University of Baltimore.  His other creditials include Forest Warden, ISA Licensed Arborist, Certified Tree Care Expert, National Association for Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide, MDA Certified Pesticide Applicator.
