| Taste the Flavors of the Upper Bay
The 6th Annual Upper Bay Seafood Soup Challenge will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, 26 July 2009 on the grounds adjacent to the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum.During the “Soup Challenge”, local restaurants will participate in three seafood soup categories before a panel of culinary judges. The public, always enthusiastic, is invited to judge their overall favorite after tasting the offerings. Prior to the “Challenge”, Kerry Dunnington, food columnist for a number of trade publications, magazines and newspapers, as well as author of This Book Cooks, will give a presentation. At 1:00 p.m. she will give a brief but informative talk on the nutritional and harmonious benefits of eating foods in their growing season and the powerful impact eating local foods have on the environment. Following the presentation, the author will be offering a sampling from one of the award winning recipes found in her cookbook. She will also be available for book signing. In addition to Ms. Dunnington judging, her husband, Nick Dunnington, who is her official taste-tester, will participate. Mr. Thomas Meyer of Chez Tomas, a Bel Air based culinary business offering cooking classes, as well as a culinary instructor at Harford Community College, will be the second judge. The third judge is Chef Alaina Pippitt, also a culinary instructor at Harford Community College and graduate of the culinary school, The Restaurant School. Chef Alaina is the founder of Alaina’s Gourmet Creations, a catering and teaching business also located in Harford County. Between 8 - 10 restaurants will participate in the challenge with some restaurants providing soups in two categories. All of the restaurants are from the Upper Bay and have received praises for their delectable soups. Winners of the Judges’ Maryland Crab Soup, Judges’ Cream of Crab Soup, and Judges’ Seafood Soup, as well as the People’s Choice (overall favorite) will be given plaques. They will also be awarded a shadow-boxed wooden soup spoon made from the wood of a historic Skipjack. This unique prize will be displayed at their restaurant for the year.
