Winter 2008 Annual Appeal
Dear Friends of the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum,
2007 was an exciting year. Working in partnership with educational systems, teachers, students and the community, our educational programs helped to bring the history and culture of the maritime traditions to life. Our annual Mari*fest in which we hosted the exhibit of the John Smith Shallop proved to be one of our largest and most successful to date; we launched our first Annual Secret Garden Tour showcasing the beautiful private gardens in the Havre de Grace community; and monthly we featured unique programs that enlightened us all about the contrasting cultures of Native Americans and the European settlers as we gear up for our exhibit opening: “Beyond Jamestown, Life 400 Years Ago.”
We worked persistently ensuring that the plans of our Capital Campaign come to fruition. Our goals of completing the museum’s facility to include the requisite spaces for our BoatBuildingSchool, Environmental Classroom, a Discovery Room, Exhibition Galleries, a CollectionsPreservationCenter, and a Maritime Library and ResourceCenter are underway. In 2008, you shall see your MaritimeMuseum undergo quite a transformation as we expand beyond our main floor and begin the buildout of the ground level to house the ChesapeakeWoodenBoatBuildersSchool and our Susquehanna Flats Environmental Classroom and install our first professional exhibit focusing on the region’s early explorations and settlements.
2008 will truly be a year of extraordinary activity as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. 20 years ago a historically-minded group of local citizens founded the Havre de GraceMaritimeMuseum as a privat, non-profit, educational institution. They recognized that the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Lower Susquehanna River and the Upper Chesapeake Bay was fast disappearing. The MaritimeMuseum was established to help protect these maritime traditions for future generations. Our mission remains to collect, document, preserve and interpret the maritime skills and heritage of the Lower Susquehanna River and Upper Chesapeake Bay.
We know that the success of the past 20 years is because of the dedication and support of our friends, members, volunteers, partners and the community. We are asking for your continued support as you celebrate with us and help the museum keep pace with our expanding region; promote and increase our tourism economy; provide unique educational opportunities; and protect our heritage and environment.
Will you please help us to continue this important and exciting work by making a donation to The Havre de Grace Maritime Museum? Your support is greatly appreciated
Sincerely,
Brenda Dorr Guldenzopf
Executive Director
General Monetary Donations
Also, think about underwriting any part of our upcoming events-maybe just the band, the flowers, desserts, or signage. Whatever you can do, it is all appreciated.
Think, too, about using a monetary donation to remember a loved one, a bride and groom, a friend preparing to retire, or maybe a new Navy graduate in your family. Many people are leaving bequests in their wills to museums. Don’t ever think it’s not enough. Seventy-five percent of donations come to organizations from households of less than $35,000. Is a little bit left over from your tax return? You could be the first to donate the seed money for the new maritime building!
Donations of Artifacts or Photographs
Do you have a maritime story to share with us? Do you have historic artifacts, journals, photographs, or documents you would like to donate to the museum? Would you like to help preserve our maritime past for the future? If so, please contact the museum, at (410) 939-4800 we would like to talk to you.
