Kids’ Summer Story Time

The Havre de Grace Maritime Museum is hosting a FREE Kids’ Summer Story Time every Thursday during the month of July at 10:30 AM. Each week, Miss Sue Capp will read a different story. Join us in the Kids’ Corner for story time and then participate in a fun craft (related to the story with recycle, reuse, and repurpose in mind) and a snack in our Environmental Center. The age range for this program is toddler to elementary school.

The reading for our July 26 Story Time was Quiet in the Garden written and illustrated by Aliki. Afterward, the group went out the side door onto the deck to see the effects of the opening of extra gates at the Conowingo Dam after days of steady rains raised the level of the Susquehanna River, affecting the Chesapeake Bay. We saw how the water had made its way to just under the promenade flooding our aquatic plants.

Making our way down to the lab, the kids worked on their craft, a butterfly fashioned out of paper egg cartons, pipe cleaners, and wooden ice cream spoons. The snack was how to make ice cream in ziploc baggies. We made up the mix, poured it into a small baggie, placed that in a larger baggie that held ice and salt, and learned the magic of turning liquid into solid.
