How to Read a Nautical Chart Class

  • Havre de Grace Maritime Museum 100 Lafayette Street Havre de Grace, MD, 21078 United States (map)

THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL.

Unravel the mystery of nautical charts in this course with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 054-22-07 and the President of the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum, Commander Bruce Russell, US Coast Guard (Retired). Through hands-on exercises and practical problems, aspiring nautical navigators will learn how to interpret nautical charts and use situational awareness to arrive safely at their destinations and return to port. Charts and tools are provided. By the end of this course, you will understand how to successfully travel in the open water and find important “landmarks of the sea” – buoys, markers, shoreline features, water depth, bottom type, magnetic compass variations, latitude and longitude, dangerous area indicators on charts, and more.

The course cost is $35 per person, but is free to first responders and active military. Cost includes a practice chart. Registration is required and class size is limited. This course is planned for adults (older teens may participate with parental permission). Update: This class is now FULL.
