Join us for a reading of the newly released charming children's book, Sheldon's Time, by local author Lindsey Pope. This event includes a storytime by the author, book signing, pirate "spin the prize wheel", and a museum scavenger hunt, all for the low price of $5 admission! If you have ever looked at people having fun on a stand up paddle board and thought about giving it a try, this course is for you! We will cover the basics; how to get on your board, fall off and get back on again, as well as simple SUP strokes and other tips for your first outing.

Trees serve many different roles in our environment and our daily lives. In this class, students learn how different types of trees function, focusing on trees that are native to our piece of Maryland. Students will use forestry tools to measure trees and determine the approximate age while understanding how to identify a tree's health. Students will discover different types of tree management strategies that are used to protect our most precious resources.
Courses will start promptly at the time they are scheduled. Parents/Guardians must attend with your student. Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and a water bottle. If you have any questions, contact Environmental Center Director Meredith Maloney at (410) 939-4800 .
Rupert Rossetti, Octoraro Watershed Association (OWA), will provide an introduction to Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring in the Octoraro, focusing on the What, When, Where, Why, & Who.
Rupert has been monitoring in the southern end of the watershed since 2005. The Octoraro Watershed Association, as part of the Octoraro Source Water Collaborative and with support and encouragement from the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, the Lancaster Clean Water Partners and the Chester Water Authority, initiated a monitoring program in the Upper Octoraro in 2017. OWA currently fields 3 teams of volunteers who sample 14 sites across the 208 square mile watershed every 4 weeks.
An outdoor Education class for grades 8-10!
Students investigate their local watershed and wetlands, and learn how these ecosystems interact and connect among the Earth’s hydrosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere. Students learn why watersheds and wetlands are essential while documenting their biological, chemical, and physical characteristics. Students will conduct a series of water parameter tests, discover some of the microscopic life found in the Chesapeake, and understand why this data matters. The data students collect becomes part of an ongoing monitoring project at the Environmental Center.
This class is FREE and available to grades 8-10.

An outdoor education class for grades 5-7!
What does it mean to be a non-native species? What are native and pioneering plants? Understand the benefits that plants have in shaping our environment and the drawbacks some plants pose. Students work together to learn how plant communities interact within our environment. Field techniques are explored to identify and survey plant biodiversity and why that is important for the greater ecosystem.
This class is FREE and available to students grades 5-7.
Award winning artist and retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, Craig “Jake” Jachens, lives in Havre de Grace, Maryland and works at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
Following in the footsteps of his Grandfather and Father, who were both nationally celebrated photographers, Jake has continued their work for over 40 years capturing images of all types from his extensive travels around the world. His recent works concentrate on birds, specifically bald eagles which he photographs at the Conowingo Dam in Darlington, Maryland on the Susquehanna River.
The bald eagle was adopted as the symbol of the United States because of its spectacular strength and boundless resolve. One of the largest birds found in North America, bald eagles stand about 30 inches tall, sport a wingspan of 6 to 7 feet, and weigh between 8 and 14 pounds.
The eagle represents unlimited freedom as they fly from the tops of lofty mountains and heights of up to 10,000 feet to dive as fast as 100 mph to the streams and rivers in valleys below. This majestic bird has an extremely long life span living an average of 20 years but can live in the wild for more than 30 years. Bald eagles are also extremely loyal, keeping their mates for life and return to their original nest to share parenting duties in raising their young eaglets.
Truly an All-American bird, North America is the only place it can be found in the entire world. This steely-eyed raptor with its constant look of determination and strength is the perfect symbol of our great nation! Hooah!

Instructors from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be teaching two interactive online sessions followed by an online test taken at your convenience. BEAUTY WORTH PRESERVING - In this special exhibition, Mal captures the picturesque natural beauty of our waterways, along with the iconic marine wildlife that lives here. Her focus also includes striking images of the variety of vessels that ply the waters of the Susquehanna and Chesapeake - many unique to this region. It is from the deck of a boat, captained by her husband, that she is able to create such engaging compositions, intimately connecting the viewer with the subject. Come to the opening reception on February 4, 2022 from 5-7 p.m.

The exhibit "Up to Here" addresses the issue of climate change through art. Local artist Nic Galloro of Strawberry Lane Studio will be hosting the opening reception on Fri., November 19th from 6-9pm, which coincides with the HdG Art Walk. All are welcome to attend!
Enjoy an evening of jokes and storytelling at the Havre de Grace Elks Lodge featuring local amateur comedians.
The ticket price includes hors d'oeuvres, wine/beer, and non-alcoholic beverages (soda, water, coffee) in addition to a cash bar at the venue.

Join Prof. Colleen Webster for evening birding along the Havre de Grace Promenade and grounds of the Maritime Museum. Afterwards, come see Terry Hermsen, a poet, musician and professor at Otterbein University, perform a casual outdoor concert at the Maritime Museum featuring songs off a newly-released album.
The first-ever Autumnfest will be on Sat., October 2, 2021 from 10 AM - 4 PM on the grounds of the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum and Concord Point Lighthouse Keeper’s House. We will have native plants, seasonal fall plants, perennials, mums, garden décor and pumpkins for sale, as well as artisan and craft vendors on site. Do your holiday shopping early!
There will also be live music, food trucks, pumpkin decorating, and other family-friendly activities. Professional pumpkin carver Patrick Cabry will be doing live pumpkin carving beginning at 1 PM. Visit "Scarecrow Row" until 3 PM to vote for the best upcycled scarecrow. There will also be a pumpkin contest.
The Shrimp & BBQ Fest is back this year! For just $45 a person, you get an all you can eat and drink shrimp and BBQ meal with wine and beer pairings. In addition, there will be a silent auction and raffle prizes on site. This is a great location with amazing views of the waterfront. We hope you can make it!
