Hands-on, community driven projects for your students
Our Service Learning Projects offer an educational approach that combines learning objectives with community service. The projects provide a pragmatic and progressive learning experience while meeting societal needs.
What is included?
All materials needed to conduct the project.
Classroom visits with 45 minute activities that are project specific.

Available Projects
Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) Grow Tanks
Designed for the winter/spring semester

Learn about aquatic vegetation and the critical roles that it serves in our coastal ecosystem.
Evaluate historical beds in the Chesapeake Bay and where current beds are located.
Grow your own seedlings that will be used for future research projects and plantings in the summertime by the Center and its partners.
Understand how water quality and shoreline erosion is impacted by SAVs.
Design community info-graphics to support SAVs and water quality.
Our grow tank project follows the guidelines set by the Department of Natural Resources SAV Watchers program. The Environmental Center has permits to collect, grow, and monitor SAVs. We supply each classroom with all of the materials needed to complete this project.
Bird Houses & Bat Boxes
Offered year round, installation dates may vary
$15.00 per student
Learn how local habitats that support different types of bird and bat species has been impacted by urbanization and how these animals are adapting.
Develop crafting skills to build different type of housing for local species and how installation sites are chosen.
Design posters and flyers to educate residents about the importance of birds and bats serve within their communities.
The bird houses and bat boxes are a part of the Environmental Center and Havre de Grace Tree Commission partnership to restore habitats within the City. The Environmental Center hopes to educate residents and visitors about the benefits that local species of birds and bats serve in our region.
Rain Gardens, Arboretums & Conservation Plantings

Identify areas around your school or in your community that could serve as a potential site for a rain garden or conservation landscape.
Learn about being a watershed steward and protecting your natural resources from stormwater runoff.

Learn forestry techniques to monitor your school's trees and develop a school tree canopy management plan.
